We are involved in a variety of outreach and educational programs.  As stated in our mission, Animal Services is committed to making the Rochester community safe for its human and non-human residents.  Although enforcement is a major component of our operations, education and training are also essential.  That means providing educational programs for the community and pursuing on-going training for our animal care and control personnel.  Read more about what's going on at Animal Services in our Kennel Quarterly.

The Fast & The Furriest
10K Race & 1-Mile Dog Walk

The 2007 Furry Race/Walk was a wonderful success!  There were 184 registered runners and 79 dog walkers on a gorgeous summer morning.  The Verona Street Animal Society raised over $23,000 in registrations, pledges, donations, and corporate sponsorship.  Those funds will be used to help subsidize spay and neuter surgeries for low-income pet owners and to support the spay and neuter programs at Animal Services.  A portion of the funds will also be directed toward promoting the programs and services provided by Animal Services.

Join us on Saturday June 28, 2008 for The Fast & The Furriest 10K Race & 1-Mile Dog Walk organized by the Verona Street Animal Society.  VSAS is a not-for-profit 501(c)3 organization established to help support the mission and programs of Animal Services. Through this event, VSAS is primarily looking to raise awareness about the City's animal shelter and its programs and to boost adoptions and volunteer recruitment.  Additionally, the group also hopes to raise some much-needed funds to help support the spay/neuter program, improve animal care, and enhance materials to promote the Animal Services mission.  Come on down to enjoy this beautiful 10K course through the City of Rochester and along the Genesee River or bring your dog and join us for the 1-mile walk around Brown Square Park.  Registration is available online.  Please use the pledge form to help raise money for the animal shelter.  Volunteers are also needed.  For more information please contact Chris Fitzgerald at Chris.Fitzgerald@cityofrochester.gov

Open House
In celebration of National Animal Shelter Appreciation Week, Animal Services is having an open house on Sunday November 2, 2008 from 10am-3pm.  Come tour the shelter, visit the animals, find out how to get involved as a volunteer, learn about pet grooming, housetraining, and obedience.  There will be a K9 dog demonstration in neighboring Brown Square Park.  Bring your pet for a free nail clipping or to have a microchip ID implanted ($30).  Learn more about our spay-neuter programs and take a peak in on the veterinary team in action.  This annual event is a great opportunity to highlight the life-saving work that Animal Services performs on a daily basis.

Service Dog Program

Animal Services has teamed up with Dr. Larry Wallnau and his dog Ben in offering an informative program on the laws and etiquette regarding service animals. Presentations are flexible and can be geared for hotel and restaurant personnel, law enforcement officers, public servants, community groups, or classrooms. Contact the shelter at (585)428-7274 if you are interested in finding out more about the program.
